The Five Funny Films Of Chevy Chase.

Drudge is reporting that Chevy Chase (the "actor," not the wealthy Maryland suburb) made an ass out of himself at some Kennedy Center pow-wow.

Ace picks up the story too, but with a funny Top Ten.

Well, almost funny: Ace forgets that when referencing the flop Nothing But Trouble, it's always best to refer to it by it's original working title, Valkenvania.

One reading of the history of SNL, Live From New York, will convince you forever that Chase is a major-league cheesedick. Which the Drudge story confirms.

Man, why did Chevy become the star? How come we never read a Drudge story on Garrett Morris?

Anyways, the story permits me to bring up a useful judgment test I ask of many people at one point or another:

What are the five funny Chevy Chase films?

Now, it's not a trick question; I won't say "Wrong! There are no funny Chevy Chase films." I believe that there are five films of value in Chevy Chase's abundantly crappy filmography.

But please note, I said *five*; there are no more than five. Period. End of discussion.

Take up valuable predictions in the comments section. First post with all five wins a Garfield Ridge no-prize.

Oh, and I swear on behalf of a non-existent God that if Garfield Ridge regular reader Angus says Deal of the Century, I will kill him.

I will!

UPDATE: The answer?

A lot of folks came close, but the only funny Chevy Chase films are, in no particular order:
-- Caddyshack
-- Fletch
-- National Lampoon's Vacation
-- National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
-- Spies Like Us

Those are the facts. Now, for some opinion:

-- Other Chevy Chase movies have funny *scenes*; European Vacation ("Big Ben! Parliament!"), Fletch Lives ("Bend over."), etc. But the five above are the only ones that are funny throughout.

Don't get me wrong, I have soft spots for some of these, but my opinion doesn't count when it comes to the Top 5.
--Caddyshack is the funniest film on that list, but Fletch is the funniest *Chevy Chase* film on that list, and eminently more quotable in daily situations ("It's all ball bearings these days!").
-- Christmas Vacation is funny not because Chevy Chase is in it; in fact, Randy Quaid steals the movie ("Shitter was full!"). However, the film is iconic, if only for the Griswold Christmas lights sequence alone.
-- Spies Like Us wasn't very funny when it first came out, but it improved greatly with repeated viewings. Also, to anyone who's ever worked in the Pentagon, State Department, or intelligence community, Spies Like Us is mandatory viewing, like Office Space is for cubicle trolls.

Nope.

I'm pretty much with Ranger on this. I can't remember a single line from Fletch Lives. But European Vacation is kinda funny.

Caddyshack
Spies Like Us
Fletch Lives
Christmas Vacation
and Funny Farm

I actually won't vote since I've had this fight with Dave, like a Bazillion times...

Angus

PS, not only is Deal of the Century highly underrated, but so is the Eddie Murphy/Dudley Moore vehicle Best Defense!

Under the Rainbow (how could you guys forget this one?)
Caddyshack
Vacation
Fletch
Three Amigos (just barely)

If those aren't the five, then I give up.

Foul Play
Vacation
Caddyshack
Seems Like Old Times
European Vacation

I'll give you a hint: all the answers are here.

Caddyshack
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Fletch
Seems Like Old Times
The Boob Tube

Ok back before I hated him and owned a Chevy Chase VooDoo doll:

1. Seems Like Old Times.
2. Foul Play
3.Tie: Funny Farm/Christmas Vacation (One of my favorite Christmas Movies EVER)
4. Modern Problems
5. Spies like Us.

Too bad he is a cocksucker. He was funny at one time. :)

Jennifer

1. Funny Farm
2. Christmas Vacation

Everything else was just cute to pathetic.

DBS? Get out.

No, really, just leave. Pack your bags. Go read Oliver Willis or something.

Psshaw on you and your "lamb fries". . .

The only possible reason Three Amigos shouldn't be on your list is because Martin Short and Steve Martin were better than Chevy Chase. But that movie is a classic.
