Rumsfeld stays.

Obviously, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld has his critics. And they make valid points from time to time.

But I think this is still great news.

It's hardly surprising; you can tell how much he wants to stay to see us through to victory in Iraq. He had a big hand in getting us into the war; he understandably wants to be there to get us out.

However, from the Pentagon standpoint, the chief benefit here is stability. By staying on as SECDEF, Rumsfeld's telling the rank-and-file that they better suck it up, he's here for the long haul. Given the instability at the top in the Clinton White House, this decision will continue to reshape the Pentagon into a House That Rumsfeld Built.

Again, some may not think this is a good step. I guess I'd be eager to discuss that. From my standpoint, Rumsfeld now has the opportunity to continue transforming the American military into a force that can fight the War on Terror, and win it.

We'll see how it all turns out. . .
