Good Work, If You Can Get It.

Saw this up on Drudge:

FLASH: Congressional officials have raised the maximum basic annual pay rate available to House staffers to $156,848, nearly as much as Vice President Cheney's salary of $181,400...
Now, of course everyone in this town knows that the vast majority of congressional staffers-- House staffers in particular-- are paid salaries comparable to Laotion child-labor. The $25K letter-opener job is a Washington rite of passage for many a "blue blazer, red tie" schmuck. A low-level staffer like whoreblogger Washingtonienne had to make a little somethin' somethin' on the side to make do in this town.

Typically, the only staffers on the Hill who can earn salaries even approaching six figures are either longtime committee staffers, or the Chiefs of Staff for senior members. Such experience doesn't come cheap in this town, not with all the corporate lobbying temptations thrown out there.

In return for this princely wage, the staffer forgets about ever having a real life or seeing their family, getting to spend every waking hour kissing their boss's ass. That's tough to do for a year, let alone for a career. Hence the eternal attractiveness of becoming a lobbyist, and getting to see your kids more than once a week.

Regrettably, the cost of living in Washington, D.C. is a far cry higher than the cost of living in Peoria. I'm fortunate to make a comfortable salary, but I still struggle to make my mortgage and car payments. I couldn't fathom what it would be like to raise a family in this town on one income.

Then again, I think even I could afford a couple of kids on $156K a year, so maybe I shouldn't be sticking up for these guys.

Yeah, on second thought, screw those Hill bastards. Power to the people! Power to the people!
