Movie Review: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

I'll keep this short.

The Life Aquatic is funny and enjoyable, but disappointing when compared to director Wes Anderson's previous films.

The biggest problem with the movie is that it really doesn't go anywhere. It's all about atmosphere, without much of a plot.

Also, it can't decide what the main narrative thrust of the film. At first, you think it's going to follow Bill Murray's character as he seeks to kill the shark that ate his friend. However, the appearance of a man possibly his son, played by Owen Wilson, turns the movie into more of a father-son relationship movie. But for the most part, Anderson seems bored by both stories, and after the film is over you just kind of go "huh."

That said, I still do enjoy the oddball atmosphere of Anderson's films, and Bill Murray continues to get better with age. The rest of the cast fills their own niches well, including a pretty strange turn by Willem Dafoe that made me laugh everytime he showed up.

So, if you're willing to just shut off the brain for a while and enjoy the ride, you might like The Life Aquatic too.
